Jaguar Woodblock Print

A carved woodblock color print depicting the fluid, feline profile of a jaguar in bright, vibrant colors.

In 2021, artist Crystal Worl took a residency at Taller La Chicharra, an art workshop in Oaxaca, Mexico, that provides equipment and services for hands-on artists.  The workshop specializes in engraving and press printing.

Each print is embossed on the bottom center with la chicharra, or the cicada.

This is a very limited run with only 20 numbered prints created and a small number of artist prints (a/p).  Each print is hand signed, numbered, and titled.

Numbers Available:
a/p
 "a/p" stands for: artist prints

Behind the Process

Woodblock carving is a form of relief printing, in which the intended design is carved into a woodblock, creating a relief in the design.  Paint is applied and the paper placed on the woodblock, and when it is run through the press, only the raised parts of the woodblock transfer over.

This print uses different color schemes applied in layers, meaning different relief carvings were made at each step of the process.

This is an extensive, difficult process made only possible by the professional team that helped Crystal bring her vision to fruition.
